The Future of Emerging Technology
Two weeks ago, we had the opportunity to attend MetAMS, one of Europe’s leading conferences for emerging technology and creativity. The event brought together brands and creators to explore the latest advancements in AI, AR, VR, 3D, gaming, and web3.
Despite the storm warning that day, MetAMS started with a lot of energy. Aragorn Meulendijks, also known as Mr. Metaverse, gave a keynote that was both visually stunning and conceptually representative of what MetAMS is all about. The rest of the sessions were thought-provoking, cutting-edge, and inspiring. The roster of speakers was impressive, with standouts such as Jeff Staple, Bas Van De Poel, and Matthew Drinkwater. To sum up MetAMS, we’ve highlighted the main takeaways from the event below.
- The Future of Devices
The future of technology was the common thread that ran through the event. There were different opinions on what to expect in the near future in terms of technology as we know it today. Adam Wilson from Polyform suggests that we will have a range of different devices for different uses. On the other hand, some believe that as technology advances, chips will get smaller but can do even more, and all devices will be merged into one small device that can do it all.
An example of this is the AI Pin, powered by ChatGPT. This AI device made by ex-Apple employees is going to replace our mobile phone. The Pin’s intuitive AI can understand your voice and hand gestures to accomplish tasks like responding to texts and calls, answering questions, and translating conversations between two people in real-time. With AI-powered intuitive devices like this, technology is going to integrate seamlessly with our tasks without demanding our constant attention. The 1-minute video below is a trailer that showcases what the AI pin is capable of:

- The Future of Headsets
During the “Branding: Strategies for Making Augmented Reality a Brand” panel, Adam Kyle Wilson from Polyform Studio, Bas Gezelle from PLAYAR, and Noelle Reno from SmartMedia Technologies discussed the current state of Augmented Reality (AR) and its potential future. They talked about the promise of Apple’s Vision Pro, Meta’s Quest 3, and the Meta Ray Bans, which are a collaboration between Meta and Ray Ban. The Meta Ray Bans are a pair of smart glasses that come equipped with a built-in camera and open-ear audio capabilities, allowing you to (video)call without the need for earphones or a headset. These smart glasses are already available in the US for $360.
The Meta Ray Ban smart glasses gave us a glimpse into what the future holds for AR headsets. If today’s AR glasses become as small, thin, and compact as the Meta smart glasses, it will be a promising development. For instance, you could practice playing the piano without an actual piano, since these glasses can project a piano visualization for you to practice anywhere, anytime. Similarly, you could visualize project sites or designed products. These glasses – just like the AI Pin – point to a future beyond mobile phones that is as thin and lightweight as any standard glasses.
- The Future of Innovative Technologies
Innovative technologies develop rapidly, and it’s advisable to have a legal & innovation-team on standby to keep your company up to date with the latest developments in innovation and law. Experiencing new technologies in action is crucial to understand their potential impact and relevance in the market. A visit to conferences such as MetAMS is therefore a great opportunity for us to learn and step outside our comfort zone. MetAMS gave us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the world of emerging tech, including fashion runway shows which were made for the Metaverse. AI will definitely change the world as we know it and we as a team follow all the current international court cases and debates about possible legal solutions very closely.
